Hello my lovely crocheters,

If you’ve been following me for a while — or if you at least read my tiny “About Me” — you already know one thing about me:
I am a big fan of scary stories.
Yes
while some people relax with meditation music or ocean waves, I prefer ghosts, stalkers, and eerie footsteps behind someone at 2 AM. What can I say? We all have our own version of self‑care.

Today’s post is a short one, but I really wanted to share and slightly promote one of my absolute favorite creators in the scary‑story world:

🎧 The “Let’s Read” Podcast
Available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and also on YouTube (but with one tiny catch — more about that later).

🎧 Why I Listen to Scary Stories While Crocheting

For many people, listening to podcasts is a way to relax, switch the mind off, or make chores less boring.
For me, the love for “scary audio content” started years ago, back when I worked in my previous, very stressful job as a line manager. When my brain was overloaded with numbers and tasks, I would put on scary stories to clear my head.

Then — life got busy, and I somehow stopped.
No idea why.

Fast‑forward to my months of sick leave
and suddenly, scary stories became my companion again.
But this time, I found someone new.

đŸ—Łïž Meet Joel — The Voice Behind “Let’s Read”

The narrator’s name is Joel, and let me tell you:
This man is a gift to anyone who loves storytelling.

  • His voice is calming (shockingly calming for someone reading spooky stuff).
  • He plays different characters so well — from older ladies to complete psychopaths.
  • He reads at the perfect pace: not too slow, not too fast.
  • And the atmosphere he creates
 chef’s kiss.

I know there are other narrators out there and sometimes he has guests too, but Joel is my absolute favourite.
There’s just something magical about how he reads.

To give you an idea:
I can listen to his stories and count stitches correctly at the same time.
And we all know that if you miscount
your project starts looking like a confused potato.

So the bar is pretty high.

Microphone and lit candle casting a mysterious hooded shadow on a wall.

đŸ“ș YouTube vs Podcast Apps

You can listen to “Let’s Read” on YouTube as well, but here’s the only downside:

âžĄïž The ads.

Imagine:
You’re completely absorbed, your hook is flying, your bunny’s head is taking shape, you’re waiting for the climax of the story

and suddenly:

✹“Try our new anti‑aging face cream!”✹

No.
Just no.

Unless you have YouTube Premium, go straight to Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
No interruptions, no broken atmosphere — just pure creepy goodness.

😮 Scary Stories = Bedtime Relaxation

You might laugh, but Joel’s voice is so calming that:

I fall asleep listening to scary stories.
Regularly.

My husband is not a fan of this hobby.
He prefers stand‑ups — which I also love, but they make me laugh until I nearly pee myself, which doesn’t help when trying to fall asleep.

Meanwhile, he just lies down, turns to his side, and is asleep in 3 seconds.
I don’t understand how he does that.
Not human.

So in the evening, I switch from stand‑ups to scary stories, and it works beautifully.

And no — I don’t get nightmares.
Not once.
Even if the story is about someone being followed at night on an empty road or dealing with ghosts in their basement.

Apparently my brain finds that relaxing.
Who knows why.

đŸ‘» So What Kind of Stories Are There?

Honestly? Everything.

In the podcast description, you always see the theme:

  • ghost encounters
  • creepy neighbors
  • stalkers
  • road trip horror
  • paranormal episodes
  • weird people doing weird things
  • “this should not have happened but it did” stories

There’s something for every spooky mood.

This is NOT a paid promotion (sadly, haha 😄).
I don’t earn anything from recommending the podcast.
It’s simply something that genuinely helps me:

  • calm down
  • focus
  • clear my mind
  • and have some background company while crocheting

It’s especially perfect when working on bigger, repetitive pieces — like hats, body parts, or long rounds where you don’t need to count every single stitch.

And once you get used to multitasking, you can enjoy them even while making toys.

There are also other narrators you might like — e.g., Mr. Nightmare, Mr. Scary Stories, Fear Files, Buried Files — just search “scary stories” and you’ll fall down an endless rabbit hole.

💛 Your Turn

  • podcasts?
  • audiobooks?
  • YouTube channels?
  • calming music?
  • or do you crochet in quiet zen mode?

Share your recommendations with me in the comments — I’d honestly love to discover some new voices, new stories, or even new genres to listen to.

Thank you for being here, and see you in the next blog post.
Happy crocheting, everyone! đŸ§¶âœš
