Hello my fellow crocheters and lovely humans,
welcome back to another Happycapy blog post!
And as promised — today I finally introduce you to the one, the only, the true ruler of our household:

🐾 Nina, the Calico Queen

(the supervisor of all crochet activities, toy inspector, yarn thief, plant relocator, and emotional support gremlin)

Her majesty silently judging you

🐱 A Tiny Baby Ball of Chaos

We got Nina when she was only six weeks old — far too early, but the family she was born into experienced severe cat allergies and had to give up the kittens immediately.

She was tiny.
Like… 400 grams tiny.
A little trembling fluff ball who looked like a lost piece of cotton.

Fast forward 1.5 years, and now she’s a proud 4.2 kg furry queen, full of attitude, opinions, zoomies, and charisma.

And I am still amazed that such a small creature controls approximately 98% of what we buy, how we live, and what we’re allowed to keep in the apartment.

🌱 The Day My Plants Lost Their Freedom

Before Nina entered the chat, I was a plant lover:
plants on shelves, plants by the windows, plants everywhere.

Then Nina discovered gravity.
And Feng Shui.
And her own aesthetic vision for the apartment.

She “rearranged” my plants by throwing them off the windowsill, table, shelves — basically wherever I thought they looked nice.

So now we have:

  • fewer real plants
  • more artificial plants (I never liked them, but at least they survive)
  • real plants only in locations where even a ninja cat cannot reach them

Nina still tries, of course.
Persistence is part of her brand.

🛏️ “Pets shouldn’t sleep in the bed!” — said no real pet parent ever

We all know how this goes:

People without pets: “The cat sleeps on the floor.”
People with pets: “HAHAHA… no.”

Nina slept with us from day one.
Of course she did.
She missed her mom and siblings — and she was so tiny, we wanted her to feel safe.

What? It´s mine!

Now?
We are the guests in her bed.

She has multiple sleeping spots in the apartment:
blankets, cushions, chairs, boxes, fancy cat beds…

And yet she chooses:

  • my head
  • my husband’s stomach
  • my shoulder
  • the warmest part of the couch
  • exactly the spot I need right now

Classic.

🛋️ The Couch Situation

Last year we bought a big new couch so all three of us could fit comfortably:

  • Me
  • My husband
  • And Her Majesty, Nina

Guess who uses 70% of the couch?
Yes.

Most evenings she sleeps on her own side…
But when she decides it’s too cold, she moves right next to the radiator — which is unfortunately where WE usually sit.

If she wants that spot, she gets it.
We just adapt.
Her home, her rules.

🧶 Crochet + Nina = Chaos (and love)

When I started crocheting again, I thought I’d just need to protect the occasional yarn ball.

HAHA.
Sweet, innocent me.

Reality check:

  • Hats with pompoms?
    Instant target. Hide immediately.
  • Toys?
→ Usually ignored… unless it’s the llama. Nina hates the llama. The llama must be protected at all costs.
  • Yarn balls?
→ She steals them like a jewel thief and sprints to the bedroom to hide her loot.

This is why… 👉 All my yarn is now stored in containers with lids.
Mandatory, non-negotiable, Nina-proof.

Very untypical – yarn not covered and Nina is definitely near….

🍽️ What We Buy for Her (Hint: Not Toys)

We always try to bring something home for Nina when shopping.

But fancy toys?
Luxury cat beds?

Absolutely useless.

Her favorite things are:

  • cardboard boxes
  • paper bags
  • socks (more about that in a second)

We buy:

  • high-quality wet food
  • interesting dry food to keep her curious
  • snacks
  • and more snacks

But we always, ALWAYS return to the same brand because that’s what Her Majesty approves.

🧦 The Sock Olympics

Nina has one pair of socks she adores.

She brings them to us.
Drops them at our feet.
Looks at us like:
“Throw it. NOW.”

And we throw.
And she fetches.

Yes, fetches.

We laugh that she is a cat-dog hybrid, because she LOVES games that cats normally don’t care about.

😼 Attitude Level: Expert

Nina is extremely active and extremely expressive.
When she wants attention and doesn’t get it, she lets us know.

With:

  • scratches
  • small bites
  • offended meowing

My husband’s arms look like he fought a wild animal.
He even had to explain it to the nurse during his blood test so they didn’t think something terrible was happening at home.

“No no, my wife isn’t violent. We just have a dramatic cat.”

💛 But Here’s the Best Part

She brought so much joy into our lives.

For my husband — Nina is his first pet ever.
For us both — she is our child.

She comes for kisses.
She sleeps on us when we’re sad.
And during my worst PNES periods, she always lay on me, purring, comforting, grounding me without even knowing it.

She’s chaos.
But she’s also love.

🌼 This Is Just the Beginning

This is only Part 1 of the Nina Chronicles — believe me, I could write books about her antics.

And I probably will.

If you have a calico cat (or any chaotic pet), I would LOVE to hear your stories in the comments.

Does your furry overlord also:

  • steal yarn?
  • rearrange furniture?
  • sleep in weird positions?
  • think you bought the couch specifically for them?

Let me know!

Lots of kisses from me and Nina 💛🐾
See you soon in the next post!
